Disney is the third largest media and entertainment corporation in the world, after Time Warner, which is second, and News Corporation which is first. Founded on October 16, 1923 by brothers Walt and Roy Disney as a small animation studio, it has become one of the biggest Hollywood studios.
The creator of Mickey Mouse and founder of the Disneyland® and Walt Disney World® Theme Parks was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1901. His father, Elias Disney, was Irish-Canadian. His mother, Flora Call Disney, was of German-American descent. Walt was one of five children, four boys and a girl.
Walt's inquisitive mind and keen sense for education through entertainment resulted in the award-winning "True-Life Adventure" series.
"The Mickey Mouse Club" and "Zorro" were popular favorites in the 1950s. A pioneer in the field of television programming, Disney began television production in 1954 and was among the first to present full-color programming with his "Wonderful World of Color" in 1961.
Walt Disney took a deep interest in the establishment of California Institute of the Arts, a college-level professional school of all the creative and performing arts.
